i wrote something. one new year's resolution i haven't shattered. except this was an assignment, so.... well anyways, just so you know wtf is going on in it, the assignment was to make something that is ugly, beautiful

Driving down a mountain road, I notice at a glance a behemoth abandoned truck, like some fallen mastodon that has thawed in a new age. I look at its make, its model, and wonder what brought it there, or how long it has remained. It must have been for some long time, because the metal body, once smooth and machined, is now rusted and dented in the most wondrous ways. Wild grass and burrs have begun the incomprehensibly slow reclamation of the minerals, compounds, and elements held within the truck.

The metal has been oxidizing since Reagan’s era, perhaps, and the rust given forth creates fascinating concentric patterns, full of color when looked upon closely. I see time wearing our bold technology down to nothing, and it makes me a happier person. It’s beautiful, for when looking at the decaying vehicle, I see that nothing is forever, and forever is nothing; everything is impermanent. As many problems as I can find in this strange world, I can glance at a rust encased car with cracked windows and tattered treads and imagine that maybe a raccoon has found a home for its family inside of it, or that maybe a snake has found comfort on the sunned warmth of its muted, metal parts. And as I drive further on down the road, I imagine that time is triumphing over our reckless innovation. That, in due time, the rain will batter our ingenuity into the ground, and the wind will fleck away the metal until nothing is left.
