Brief summary: Narcissa Malfoy's trial
Completion: Completed
Narcissa could not stop pacing the small length of her cell. Time had little meaning in detention, so she had made all of her grooming preparations for her trial immediately after breakfast--brushing her hair and teeth, and smoothing out the wrinkles in the shapeless, grey robe she wore. Fortunately, grey looked good on her. She had heard that Muggle prisoners were given orange clothing, which thought made Narcissa wince in aesthetic horror.
This morning, she welcomed any distraction from the gravity of the charges she was about to face.
A couple of hours after breakfast, when she must surely have worn a depression in her cell's stone floor, the guards arrived to escort her to the courtroom. Narcissa acquiesced to them without a word, kept her expression neutral and her eyes open as they went down the lift, through a couple of corridors, and into the chamber.
The door creaked slightly on its hinges as it was pushed open, revealing the red-robed Wizengamot members all sitting in their tiered seats, staring at her as if she were something under a magnifying lens.
Courtroom 5 looked exactly as she remembered the one from a couple of years ago, when Lucius had been sentenced to Azkaban. The memory made Narcissa falter a step. But she took a deep breath, collected herself, and continued walking at a measured pace to the great wooden chair where the accused sat.
The hard, wooden seat pressed uncomfortably against her legs, and it must have been built for someone larger than she; Narcissa felt like a child's doll in it. Snakelike, the heavy chains rose of their own accord and curled around her extremities, holding her fast.
Then the head of the Wizengamot rose, and the trial began.
