After nearly two years the tiny paper envelope could finally hold no more. Golden Galleons, Silver Sickles and Bronze Knuts tore from the tattered parchment and fell like burdened raindrops tinkling in their metallic properties as they rushed through George’s hands to the ground.
“Fuck!” As usual, George Weasley was already running late.
The clock on the wall had no sympathy and continued whizzing time away as George fretted about, plucking coin after coin from the ground and dropping them into a new green velvet pouch. The very same bag he had been trying to fill previously, before the envelope had ripped, was now beginning to fill and by the time George had accounted for the last coin, he was twenty minutes late.
George didn’t bother with the rope ladder. Nor did he bother with the stairs. Grabbing his wand from the bedside he burst from the room and reappeared directly one floor below his previous position. Several new customers startled but the few regulars present in the shop did not even bat an eye. After all, a wizard popping in unexpectedly was far from the only thing that jumped and burped in Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes.
“Verity!” George called as he walked through the shop, stuffing the coin pouch deep into his pockets and tucking his wand behind his left ear. The tiny shop seemed more crowded than usual and it was several moments before George found Verity huddled in a corner helping several younger witches to understand the properties of Ten-Second Pimple Remover. George stood back for once and waited patiently, watching Verity and smiling goofily, though he didn’t know it.
