Hermione sighed as she flopped back on her bed and stared at the ceiling. She'd been trying all day to make her parents understand why she wasn't planning to attend University.
They had spent the days since her date with Ron dragging her from University to University all over England and they even took her to a few in Scotland. Hermione had walked the campuses, she'd looked at the brochures, and she'd reminded her parents repeatedly that the classes at Hogwarts had been non-traditional.
Hermione had so much to do before the NEWTs and she'd even gone as far as to sneaking into Diagon Alley and purchasing an
Owl. She glanced over at Barnabas sleeping with his head tucked under his wing. He would be a fine owl for her and she only hoped that he got along with Pig and Vector.
Hermione sighed heavily and sat up. She had several owls to send off tonight. She'd been neglecting her friends and she really missed talking with Harry. It seemed as if it had been forever and she suddenly longed for the times she, Ron, and Harry had spent camping during their search.
Hermione had been thrilled to arrive home this morning and find the note from Kingsley waiting for her. She couldn't help but be grateful to him and whoever had put in a good word for her. The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures was a wonderful place to get her feet wet. Hermione had plans of course, some of them quite controversial, and she thought it would be a fine tribute to Professor Lupin to actually win freedoms for the werewolves.
Hermione swiped at a few tears that trailed across her cheeks as she thought of Professor Lupin and Tonks. There were so many that lost their lives and she still found one of the most haunting moments was when Colin Creevey was carried from the forest.
Hermione pulled the small notebook from her bedside stand and looked at it again. What a fine tribute it would be to offer up a scholarship to Hogwarts with her inheritance. It would never be enough to honor all those who had died protecting Hogwarts.
Hermione closed her eyes as she shut the book-she and Ron hadn't really gotten a chance to talk about what happened to Harry. They hadn't discussed the tears that had come when Hagrid carried Harry from the forest. Sometimes she wondered if Harry knew how much he meant to her and Ron.
Hermione opened her eyes and stared at the picture of the three of them at Hogwarts. Sometimes it felt as if they were losing that close friendship but she knew deep in her heart that they would always be friends no matter what. Ron, of course, she hoped would develop into something much more than friendship.
Tonight, she needed to concentrate on a few old friends. She only hoped that Neville still had room for her at his house. She wanted to have lunch with Ginny and she even wondered if Molly might be able to help her with her parents.
She glanced at the clock. There would be time to make revisions to her notes after she sent Barnabas off with a few letters.
