Padma Patil, who was sitting at a desk in her bedroom, saw her twin shuffle through the hallway looking somewhat sleepy. "Good morning!" She called out. She glanced at a clock, noting that it was 11:00 am. "Taking advantage of the lack of morning classes?"
"I don't see why you don't," Parvati shot back. "Is there tea in the kitchen?"
"Yes." With that, Padma returned to studying.
A few moments later, Parvati appeared in Padma's doorway, clutching a cup of green tea. "I think I might go into Hogsmeade again today. There's still so much work to be done," She announced. As she said this, she noticed that the book Padma was reading from so intently was a History of Magic textbook. "And you're going to... study?"
"Yes, well, speaking of Hogwarts, a certain source tells me-"
"Meaning our father?" Parvati cut in. Their father was one of Hogwarts' governors. In spite of his daughters attendance of Hogwarts (or, perhaps, because of it), Lakshman Patil had very little confidence in the school itself and had lobbied unsuccessfully to make changes in the way it was run. Regardless, his daughters would occasionally hear school news from him before the rest of their peers.
"Hah hah." Parvati could tell she had rather annoyed Padma, and now her sister was going to draw out the news as long as possible. Parvati simply took a sip of tea and waited.
"Fine," Padma grumbled. "It seems that we will be able to sit our NEWTS if we so choose."
"Oh! So you're studying because-"
"Because our education was so ideal last year, yes. Anyway, they should take place some time in August."
Parvati's mind started racing. August!, she thought, dismayed. That was too close for comfort, even though she had always assumed that she would eventually take the NEWTS. She could hardly get a job in the Department of Mysteries without having done so.
She marveled at her career ambitions. All the Unspeakables seemed so austere and forbidding. Assuming she obtained the job, would she become like that?
Padma's voice broke into Parvati's thoughts. "It's so soon, isn't it?" She said, a nervous note creeping into her voice.
Parvati shrugged slightly. "We'll do alright." Parvati tried to sound as confident as possible. "It's Harry Potter's birthday today." She added, trying to change the subject.
"Ah, yes. It said so in the paper today. Although you probably know that from trying to cast everyone's horoscopes."
Parvati just grinned. "Would you like to come with me and get him a card?"
"Hm. Why not? This book is terribly dull anyway." Padma slammed her textbook shut decisively.
