Dean waved one final time as the last of his friends rounded the corner and disappeared behind the old Pratchett place. He was alone now in the middle of the empty field and he ran his fingers over the football in his hands. Each line and contour seemed alien. When they had been playing, Ned had laughed at his clumsiness on the field and the others had howled every time he tripped over the ball or kicked at the air, missing the ball by inches. Dean had taken their jibes lightheartedly; he had simply become way more accustomed to playing ball in the air with his hands than on the ground with his feet.
He walked over to one of the old, half rusted goals and picked up his worn old haversack. Dean brushed the dead grass off of it before throwing it over his shoulder and slowly walking across the field towards the street that would lead him home.
Thinking of Quidditch gave him a small pang in the center of his chest. He had hoped playing football again with his Muggle friends would help him forget about Quidditch. He had hoped doing a lot of things would help him forget not just about Quidditch but the wizarding world in general and everything that had happened in the past year. Of course, nothing had. The last three months he had spent hiding away recovering back at his family home on the outer edge of London had simply left him with a longing for a world where he did not have to lie to his friend about how the last year had been and what he had done.
Yet, Dean Thomas had not even brought himeslf to stop by Diagon Alley to see how the reconstruction was going. After a year on the run relentlessly hunted by his own government, Dean had needed a break. He had needed to go home. He had avoided all contact with the wizarding world except for a few owls from Seamus. He had even ignored an official summons by the Ministry of Magic to testify at the Malfoy trials without even caring about the consequences he might face. He had wanted things to just be normal. But now that he had spent time at home he was beginning to realize how different it all felt. His family was still just as caring and understanding but everything else had changed. His friends had all taken their A levels and were heading off to Muggle universities. He was beginning to feel things for some of the girls he had known growing up and yet he could never say anything to them because he knew they would never understand his world.
Dean dropped the ball he was holding and kicked it high and far and watched as it sailed across the field and into the tall grass. As he watched he saw a tawny owl fly overhead in the darkening sky and he smiled slightly. Maybe it was finally time to go home.
