“-and ask Gawain to see what he can get from Rodriguez. The more we can find out of this artifact situation the better.” Kingsley dictated as Percy jotted quick notes and dedicated the rest to memory. “If things continue in this fashion I may need to call Coleman to pull some strings internationally, but he’s been busy handling more conduct on that French trial and the Centuar rebellion.”
Kingsley sank back in his seat, brandishing his quill to begin a tedious letter of apology to the French Minister when he noticed his undersecretary’s presence still lingering in the doorway, face set as though he were silently debating some argument of importance. Kingsley knew the other couldn’t possibly be waiting for more instructions - the younger man had the uncanny ability to arrive and leave precisely when Kingsley needed him to. The Minister settled on clearing his throat, startling Percy from his thoughts.
“Is there something you need Percy?” Kingsley asked.
“Ah yes sir, I was wondering if I could have a word with you.” Percy asked, a bit perturbed by the use of his first name despite the Minister’s constant use of it. Kingsley certainly proved a major change from any previous administration Percy had worked under, in efficiency and personality. Both Fudge and Scrimgeour had been secretive in their actions, planning everything carefully, as though playing an endless chess game. Kingsley in contrast was open in everything he did as Minister, often having dozens of people through his office to ask opinions or for knowledge, a practice that so far seemed to be having positive results. Despite the immense workload many of the miscommunications the Ministry had suffered before were clearing, all things had a new, clean air to them.
Kingsley gestured to the seat in front of his desk and nodded to Percy’s request, watching as the young man took a hesitant seat and folded his hands in his lap.
“I heard something I imagine you may find of interest.” Percy began, trying to think of how to word what he had to say. “The Magical Creatures Department is- may be corrupt.”
Kingsley raised his eyebrows in surprise, not at the information but the source. He had expected some mundane request, not political scandal. The Magical Creatures Department did not shock him in the least -if the things he had heard as an Auror had even been remotely true the department may need to be fully gutted and restored, even if the Ministry lacked the funds and workers needed for such a restoration.
“I have heard similar concerns.” Kingsley commented, still watching Percy closely. “I am curious why you would think so.”
“It’s..” Percy began, trying to think of how to word the story without seeming like an overly concerned brother. He wasn’t entirely sure why he was doing this given Charlie’s behavior the time before. He frowned at the thought of what was said, hands curling slightly. Charlie always did have a sporadic temper, the famous Weasley temper if he wanted to admit it, but if what he heard from Charlie was true then that certainly was a proper reason to be so cross. Charlie also had seemed a bit off lately, most likely from Fred’s death Percy thought with an internal sigh, and his older brother had been quite understanding during his… minor breakdown concerning some thoughts he had on the subject. Despite it all Charlie had always been his favorite he had to admit, he always made the greatest effort to include and understand Percy since the moment he was born.
“I have heard the Department is basically using their power to simply execute dangerous creatures rather than deal with the problem. My brother Charles Weasley heard this first hand from Mrs. Kirkwell.” Percy spat out the name, recalling the woman’s biting remarks during his hearing on the Crouch matter. That was one topic he and Charlie could agree on - she was a horror.
“I believe I heard mention of that - your brother got into quite the row.” Kinglsey commented, trying to keep from chuckling at the bright shade of red gracing Percy’s cheeks at the comment as he tried to choke out an explanation.
“Ah yes sir, he… well, has a bit of a temper. Very passionate about magical creatures you see.” Percy answered, silently cursing himself for acting so juvenile in front of the leader of the wizarding world. Kingsley merely allowed himself a chuckle, resting his hands on his desk.
“He’s Arthur’s boy alright, only with dragons instead of muggles from what I understand. I’ll speak with him Percy, add it to my schedule.” He said, reaching again for the quill and paper to resume his letter writing. Percy watched him in shock for a moment, surprised by the complete lack of resistance. He cleared his throat and stood, quickly gathering his things to make a hasty retreat. He hesitated in the doorway despite his rushed efforts, clutching his papers to his chest as he turned his head.
"Thank you Minister, for the time." Percy said sincerely, if not a bit awkwardly, before disappearing to his office. Kingsley merely shook his head, a soft chuckle on his lips as he began the apologetic letter to a very miffed French Minister.
