It would be rather difficult for anyone not to notice Luna, even when she was wearing a mask. Dressed in her beloved sparkly silver dress robes and a matching silver mask (and, fortunately, no vegetable jewellry), Luna glided across the hall with a glass of Gillywater in her hand and her Kneazle kitten, Persephone, drapped around her neck like a fur scarf.

She couldn't see anyone she recognised just yet, but she was sure they'd find her eventually. Right not she was simply enjoying the atmosphere.

Wits and sarcasm, beauty and agility were qualities Katie fully possessed. She could charm the hair off a cat and outshine a brilliant silver star. What she could not do, however, was arrive on time. Punctuality was not a trait she possessed. In fact, Katie had probably never been introduced to the concept.

By the time Katie arrived at the entrance to the Great Hall the Weird Sisters had already started their set. Hoards of dancers all dressed in exotic and classic outfits pulsed along to the music, their costumes lending a quality of stampeding to their actions. She, herself, had arrived in a shimmering dress of green and purple, the fabric changing colours along the spectrum as it moved along with the sway of her body. A delicate masque was fixed around her eyes and a magnificent set of decorative wings unfolded behind her shoulder blades, making her already tiny frame appear even more petite and deceivingly delicate. From the doorway, she scanned the room, looking for anyone she might recognise and be able to socialize with.

He could have probably come up with a better costume idea. He hadn't planned on going to the ball, but he knew he would have just sat home anyway and he'd had so much fun at the match with Katie and Weasleys Etc. that he thought the extra stimulus might be good for him. The reason he was late, however, was because he hadn't been able to conjure up a costume idea until about an hour before hand - and even then, it wasn't exactly hard to put together. He was wearing a thick pair of glasses with his hair parted at the side and slicked back. He had shaved for the occasion and wasn't wearing anything more than a simple, nicely cut suit - though his jacket was open, shirt unbuttoned and tie undone, a bright V of royal blue visible beneath ( ... )

If a part of Katie hadn't been secretly on the look out, she might have fallen pray to the enchanted glasses and dress suit but Oliver Wood was not that fortunate tonight. Her acute crush and strong observational skill won out over Clark Kent.

"Oy, broom boy!" Katie hollered after the retreating figure. Her unladylike voice clashed with the elegance of her costume and several heads of young prissy teens turned with sneers and painted-shut eyes to scoff at her brusque manner. The butterfly paid them no mind, however, for the object of her desires had ceased his casual walk and was turning slowly toward the familiar voice. "What are you doing, Wood? Trying to sneak past my defenses? Come on, we all know that's what I get paid for... your job is to try and stop my advances."

He rolled his eyes in feigned annoyance at the sight of Katie, but secretly was glad the pretty butterfly was indeed Katie and not just his mind playing tricks on him. He walked up to her and let a smirk come over his face. "Well, ye're no a Quidditch player tonight, ye're - well, what are you? A wee Wood nymph?" He was sure she was a butterfly, it had been a gut reaction, but she might prefer faeire, or nymph or sprite or - he was even rambling away in his mind. He had to get a hold on himself.

"Nooo..." Katie drawled, taking a step back to present herself and her handiwork. She had toiled away with quite a few plasters and curse words for a week to sew her dress and wings and she wasn't about to let the effort go to waste. "I'm a butterfly. What in Merlin's name are you? A muggle?"

Glancing around Theo noticed the Clark Kent and Butterfly conversing. It pleased him that he recognized the comic book character costume, mostly because back in France his friends had been shocked about his lack of knowledge about the world. Of course now there was no one to brag to about his discovery, no one who would listen to a snarky comment about x-ray vision. Instead he was silent, eyes moving away from the pair ( ... )

Luna hadn't really been paying much attention to the crowd. She was tapping a foot in time to the music (but thankfully not humming), and didn't even noticed the figure pushing through the sea of people until he bumped into her.

Persephone, still positioned around Luna's neck, hissed in protest, and Luna's mask slipped down so that she couldn't actually see the figure even as he apologised.

One hand soothing Persephone, and the other adjusting her mask, she smiled at him just as he tried to disappear again.

"It's quite alright," she said brightly, not actually realising who she was speaking to, "It's rather crowded in here, isn't it?"

Which, she hoped, was the reason that she hadn't seen any of her friends all night. She was beginning to feel rather worried. This new year at Hogwarts was supposed to be a chance for them to pick up from where the war had forced them to stop, and instead things seemed to have gone back to how they were before the DA.

Theo turned to look at her, surprised at the elongated reply to his brusque apology. "Uh, yes..it is rather tight,"he said awkwardly. She obviously didn't recognize him, which was no surprise. Not only had he kept to himself all those years at school he also looked different now. He wasn't as weedy, he'd filled out thanks to his training. Plus he was dressed up. Theo wondered perhaps if he should introduce himself, but that would probably only worsen the awkwardness of the whole moment. Then she might have to be embarrassed that she was talking to a Slytherin.

Theo often wondered if he thought too much about things.

Luna wouldn't have been particularly embarrassed about talking to a Slytherin, even if she had have known. It took an awful lot to embarrass Luna Lovegood.

She didn't even seem to notice he wanted to escape and avoid any further conversation, sticking out her hand once her mask was fixed properly.

"I'm Luna," she said, in case there was even one person in the school who didn't know about 'the Loony Ravenclaw girl'.

Mandy Brocklehurst walked into the Great Hall of Hogwarts and grinned at the decorations. Professor McGonagall had outdone herself--or the House Elves had.

Someone bumped into her, and Mandy shot a hand up to keep the book from falling off her head. It was part of her costume. She wore a brown medieval dress and a white cloth veil, while balancing a red book on top of her head. She had decided not to use magic to keep the book balanced because it was much more of a challenge to see if she could do it without.

She thought she might make an exception if asked to dance, though.

Mandy glanced about, looking for Su Li or at least for someone she knew. She caught sight of Luna dancing with someone in cowboy garb, and she spotted someone in a Superman costume. Mandy decided to have a nibble of cake while she watched the dancing.
