What is a bear doing on the internet?  Well, some of you may be aware that I am a performing bear and I have often found it interesting how the period dwellers of the Renaissance much enjoy having me walking among them and they dress fancy, I'm almost always a bare bear but decided to rise to the occasion of both pomp and circumstance ( Read more... )

Gules a Bear Rampant Sable Dexter and in bend two Or bordour!

I've been a heraldic artist in the SCA for over twenty years and I'm really familiar with the real world rules of heraldry. There's a concept called 'color on color' and it's a big no-no. It means that you can't put a colored charge, like a black bear, on a colored field, your red background. Black can only go on one of the two metals, argent (white) or Or (gold). Do you mean the bear is turned facing Dexter? Also, you must have left some words out because I can't tell what you have two of in bend. Is there a border Or?

Yeah, you're right, I just came back in and read further but it's too late! NO!!! Well Dexter can be left out because in this instance it would be an abatement and the Or Bordour is wrong also, so, the present coat of arms is:
Gules a Bear Rampant Sable within a double tressure Or.
It means that you can't put a colored charge, like a black bear, on a colored field, your red background. : too late, too late & $400 to construct it!! Color on Color bad! One of the main reasons for having the bright Red is to reflect the heat portion of the sun and the bear rampant sable was embroidered on the front and both sleeves of the tabard, I should have done my research BEFORE commissioning it : ( Although the Madrid city arms shows Gules a bear rampant sable)
Also, you must have left some words out because I can't tell what you have two of in bend. Is there a border Or? Yeah, messed that part up also because it's a double tressure Or, so at least I have one element correct. : ( ... )

Color against Color BAD! byron_bear January 13 2009, 16:17:53 UTC
Fortunately Germany (the many lands) did not have qualm against Black on Red. It seems that all the countries were coming up with their own standards of Emblazon. A Rampant Bear Ore simply would not have been as striking.
The neck on the Tabbard needs enlarged, as a bear my neck is somewhat large, the better to be hugged, but measures 36 inches, so, the garment will need altered but that's not a difficult matter. It was cool learning about Chivalry, about coats of arms. In my own design I've tried to include all of my heritages, both west and far west. Spanish, English and Osage. My Maternal Grandfather had immigrated from Madrid = ) (coat of arms, a bear standing against an Apple tree.

Yeah, heraldry is its very own study! That's why I leave it to the 'pros' such as Deb and the large fella from Lord Mayor's Company, Reginald. He knows a WHOLE lot about proper heraldry!
