I was born in ADA! I lived there until I was 4!

Cool you could call them and let them know you came from Ada and tell them that they should include a provision to protect Mother Bears with Cubs. Beginning Monday and until the 16th they will take public input over the phone also, not as persuasive as attending a meeting but they still have to take note of those comments and it could be helpful. The controlled hunting office is at (405) 521-3852

I used to visit Blue Hole near Ada and when young and when it was still a park, I visited Devils Den many times for vacation. It's a very lovely area, nice fishes there too = )

Did you ever have a chance to see the national park in Sulphur OK?

I certainly did and went there also on vacation many times when I was young. At that time it was still a National Park and the artisian wells were running hard and cold. Last time I was there it was hardly even filling up but it's still a nice place (you get used to the smell) Turner Falls was also a nice place to visit in summer.

Hearing in Muskogee Jan 13th at 7pm sewfastdancer January 8 2009, 04:49:30 UTC
Yep and you're the one I mentioned in my last journal entry who will be the one to go to Muskogee and speak up for the Mothers with cubs = ) I'm trying to get Curtis, my handler whom you have met, to also come to that one, if he is there say hello and also take your turn to speak up. If several people would show up there and all speak up for the Mothers with Cubs it will be all the more input to make them consider providing a provision to protect those mothers. There is a chance that he won't be able to make the meeting so I must make sure someone is there. I only have three more hearings to find people to go to and then I will have covered every hearing, they MUSt that the input seriously with that many people mentioning it.

Thank you so very much!

update on bear hunt byron_bear January 8 2009, 23:41:17 UTC
I have posted the official position of the Byron T Bear Foundation in my journal entry. Nels Rodefeld presented the official rules which now include protection of mothers with cubs, prevents den hunting but has not yet defined a 'bear' as a bear weighing 75 lbs or more (anything else would be a cub by October)and has not imposed a lottery system which would insure that no more than the quota is taken, as happened recently in New Jersey when they tried a hunt after many years.
Use my journal entry update as a template for your input to the Wildlife Department.

make sure to speak up about baiting byron_bear January 13 2009, 05:04:04 UTC
There are 50 items on the agenda. Make sure that when they say there were 300+ depredationa by bears. that they also say that is in all of 18 years! Object to the baiting stations, saying that baiting stations need removed ten days before a hunt.
Legislation will have to determine if a lottery is used, the quota set by the department is based upon the research at OSU. The next phase of the hearing will be comments, when they come to the one on the means of taking bears, they'll be recording you, state that during a hunt, baiting stations need removed before the hunt. State that a bear needs defined as weighing 75 lbs or more (this will protect the cubs who won't get larger than 70 by October).
There were more people standing up and saying, yeah, let's shoot bears than me saying let's protect them. Your voice at the meeting will count for a lot and I'm grateful, all bears are.

I won't be able to attend the meeting, but Mom and I will each call independently and tell them, as Oklahoma citizens, that we feel it important to prohibit the taking of mother bears with cubs along side and that quotas should not be exceeded.

Thank you for keeping us notified of this. We'll call next Monday morning.

Thge rules have been clarified by the Wildlife Department, I have posted the official position of our foundation as my journal entry. It would be a good template for your input to ODWC {{{{{{{{{{{Hug}}}}}}}}}}

specific rule on sows with cubs from ODWC anonymous January 8 2009, 13:25:49 UTC
Byron,

My name is Nels Rodefeld and I am one of the people you talked to at ODWC recently about the proposed bear season. I believe when I talked to you earlier I said I was not aware of any specific language protecting sows with cubs in the proposal. Immediately after our conversation I tracked down the exact language as it is being proposed and there are several provisions that I was not aware of, most notable, under the "Prohibited Activities" section, it specifically lists shooting females with cubs is prohibited. It also prohibits den shooting of bears, using dogs to hunt bears, and baiting on public property. I do have the complete and full proposal electronically and would certainly be glad to email it to you. Sincerely, Nels Rodefeld email at nrodefeld@odwc.state.ok.us

Thank you Nels,

You may notice I take the preservation of bears seriously and have posted the position of the wildlife department along with my and the foundation's official position on a bear hunt within the state of Oklahoma and our surrounding states.
I have informed the constituent parties connected to our organization of the clarification.

Byron, while I can't be there at any of the meetings, I most certainly will make phone calls asking that they include a provision to protect Mother Bears with Cubs.

Most definitely....

Position of Oklahoma Bear Hunt clarified byron_bear January 8 2009, 23:12:46 UTC
I received a message from ODWC and a provision is now made which protects mothers with cubs. I'll make a post of our official position, we still need to institute a lottery system to gain revenue for research and define a bear as one which weighs 75 pounds or more at weigh in .

See my post lj post I am putting up. Thank you so much Rowan
