In technical terms, she has a complex, but nondisplaced, radiographically-occult Salter-Harris Type 3 fracture of her right tibeal plateau.  This is not a surgical lesion, but there is controversy about whether a cast or a brace is preferred.  The seemingly best-informed opinion I have gotten so far suggests that casts can be dangerous on airplanes

"Air trapping," in which trapped regions of air expand in response to decreased air pressure, possibly impinging on the constrained tissues within the cast.
