Ryo/Tomatoes is my new OTP (from 9:07; alternatively,
immortalised in gif form). This triple-drabble is an accident that might have gone on for thousands of words if I hadn't nipped it in the bud. See what I did there. For
illuvium with much love, in a time of frustration and tomatoes. Reference not intended.
Ryo has never liked tomatoes, but somehow it’s different, out here. Here, he thinks he could eat tomatoes every day for the rest of his life, all eleven species that sit growing in neat rows around the farm. It was the sweetness that had him hooked, at first, after the initial burst of sour. Now Ryo likes the way the juice spurts in his mouth when he bites down; the contrast of textures - skin, flesh and seeds.
“Ryo-kun’s in love,” says Ohno, appearing by the fence.
Ryo almost chokes on his mouthful of tomato. “What?”
“I understand,” Ohno continues. “The plum tomatoes were my favourite, too.”
“Oh,” says Ryo, with something close to relief.
“But now I can’t really decide which I like better.”
“Well. Don’t creep up on me like that,” Ryo says sharply. There’s no bite to it, though. He stuffs the rest of the tomato into his mouth and scrambles to his feet, dusting off his trousers.
“I wouldn’t pick those others, they’re not quite ripe yet,” says Ohno. He holds out a bowl. Cherry tomatoes. “Baa-chan says we can have these instead.”
"I thought we were supposed to pick the tomatoes, not eat the lot,” says Ryo.
Ohno shrugs, and pops one into his mouth. “Tasty,” he murmurs.
Grudgingly, Ryo reaches over to grab a handful.
They end up crouching there between the fence and the patch of not-quite-ripe tomatoes, slowly but methodically demolishing the contents of the bowl.
“I think the only downside to working here,” says Ohno, “is that I always have bits of tomato skin stuck between my teeth.”
“Oh,” says Ryo.
“Ryo-kun’s cute when he doesn’t know what to say.”
Ryo scowls. “Shut up and eat your tomatoes.”
The discarded stems lie by their feet like still spiders in the dirt.
