Those few days, they lived backwards. They drove, like pilgrims without purpose, through small villages, fields, hills - an eternity of land to fill their horizon. In the nighttime Remus still sometimes glimpsed lights in the distance - sparks, or something else - but he registered these with only a dim ache.
They stopped the car next to a field two miles off the motorway. Sirius split the sections of an outdated copy of the Prophet while Remus peeled apart soggy sandwiches and redistributed their ingredients. They ate (lunch? dinner?) and read old news (MINISTRY SAYS TO KEEP CALM, PROCEED AS NORMAL; MORE MISSING IN BIRMINGHAM).
"Moony," said Sirius.
"Yes?" said Remus, carefully folding up his section of the paper. It was beginning to rain.
After so many days of silence Sirius flung his apology out like a schoolboy, awkward and almost defensive. "I'm sorry I thought it was you."
He had thought of a great many ways to respond to this, before, but now Remus could only manage, after a pause, "I know."
"Prongs-"
"Prongs would understand," said Remus, unsure if that held the jagged edge of a lie. In the musty chill of the car, even words felt stiff; syllables cramped. "Let's go back," he said, finally.
"Moony-"
"We'll probably want to read a copy of the Prophet that isn't October the twenty-ninth at some point," said Remus, attempting a smile. "Come on."
