Summary: Preparing for your role in Japan’s latest zombie blockbuster! Five drabbles.
Disclaimer: All not mine.
...the movie, set in a desolate Japan after a zombie apocalypse, will follow the lives of a team of zombie hunters as they attempt to secure safe havens for survivors to repopulate. Forming the team is a stellar cast that includes Nakamura Shido, Ikuta Toma and Koyuki. The last member has yet to be announced.
Matsumoto Jun
Jun calls Toma the night his manager tells him that he’s gotten the part.
“Oi,” he says, when Toma answers the phone. “Come over now.”
Toma does, and together they walk out to rent DVDs; they get three films from the Living Dead series, Resident Evil (because the ladies are hot) and Versus. On the rental guy’s suggestion, they also take out 28 Days Later.
“Are you planning to sleep?” asks Toma, while Jun fiddles around with the surround sound system.
“Eventually,” says Jun.
(Later, Toma glances over to see Jun scribbling notes onto the back of a furniture catalogue.)
Ohno Satoshi
“I would go fishing,” says Ohno, at the press conference. “I would make sure that nobody on the boat was infected, and then I would go out to sea.”
“Right,” says the reporter who had asked the question, looking doubtful. “That... sounds like a plan.”
“There might be a problem, though,” the director tells him, “Some zombies have been known to walk underwater.”
“Is that so?” asks Ohno, disturbed.
Another reporter has raised his hand. “Ohno-san, what other projects will you be involved in this year?”
“Wait,” says Ohno, turning to the director, “Do you know if fish can get infected?”
Ninomiya Kazunari
Nino has been ready for a zombie apocalypse since 1996.
He knows that the first places to avoid are the supermarkets and police stations, and that a baseball bat makes for a good weapon. When he was in the US, he purchased a kevlar jacket that will be his first choice of clothing, along with a sturdy pair of boots. His Pajero isn’t the ultimate survival vehicle but it still ranks pretty high.
“I’m afraid you’ll have to get a buzzcut,” his manager tells him, looking apologetic.
“Don’t worry,” says Nino, pulling off his beanie with a flourish, “I’m all prepared.”
Sakurai Sho
“There’s some sort of social commentary, isn’t there?” he says, over supper with the News Zero staff.
“I can definitely see parallels to our current global situation,” someone agrees. “The whole idea of a pandemic...”
Social commentary aside, Sho is worried.
He’s only fifteen pages in, and the script has already mentioned jumping from high ledges onto moving vans, as well as scaling disused cranes in order to lob hand grenades at swarms of zombies. In another scene, he takes out fifteen creatures with a machete.
In his phone call with the director, there had been no mention of stunt doubles.
Aiba Masaki
Aiba calls Toma the night his manager tells him that he’s gotten the part.
“Let’s go for dinner!” he says.
“It’s eleven o’clock at night,” Toma points out patiently.
“Drinks, then!”
Approximately three hours later, Aiba is getting teary-eyed over his beer.
“I’m so thankful that we got to do Stand By Me together,” he tells Toma, who beams and nods, the alcohol making him increasingly energetic. “Do you remember that time you fell asleep onstage?”
Toma chuckles sheepishly.
“You know, Toma-chan,” says Aiba, head sinking towards the tabletop, “I’m really glad we’re going to be saving the world together.”
------------
♦Versus is a Japanese zombie/yakuza movie; from what I’ve seen, the zombies have guns.
♦1996 is the year Resident Evil (or Biohazard in Japan) was released.
One possible continuation:
Scenes From The Life Of A Zombie Hunter.
