I have no idea how I could help, but I have the utmost faith in you to be an amazing Inventor Dad. (Have you worked out a steam powered pram yet dear heart?)
That instant love and certainty of knowing this child is the perfect thing one could be doing with one's life right now turned out to be a lie. The feelings I built about my son were like falling in love - they took time. He was just a bundle of work for many months before one morning when I got up at oh my god o'clock and he smiled at me. I then began to understand this was all worth it. The more you know him, the more he learns to respond, the better it will get. Until that starts to happen it is not wrong to think this may have been a mistake, it is only natural. But it is not a mistake. It is just a lot of hard work. Someone else will be getting all the chances you have had and many more besides and he will not realise that for many years. Just how amazing that is is obscured by an incredible amount of fatigue for a long time. But that is absolutely worth all the effort. It is one of the most selfless and improving things one can do - like great love always should be.
I'd merely note that Doing It Right doesn't often work too well outside of engineering problems. Might I suggest Doing What's Possible instead? Makes it far easier to live with oneself, I find!
