Wikipedia: Ziva DavidWikipedia: NCIS (Series) Personality:
There's a lot to Ziva David. She's first and foremost a special agent, and in a lot of ways she's defined by her job. Really, this isn't through too much choice of her own, which is in itself another reason for some of the facets of her personality.
She was raised with the purpose of joining Mossad by her father Eli, against the wishes of her mother. Rivka David encouraged Ziva in the arts and playing like any little girl would--Eli blindfolded his daughters and took them out into the forest to leave them to find their way home. All things that were deemed trivial weren't allowed, severely discouraged, or outright ignored by her father--he never once came to one of Ziva's ballet recitals or piano performances, especially when she started taking better to his training than her sister Tali. This early encouragement of interests that would be of use in Mossad left Ziva enjoying more stereotypically masculine activities like sports and weapons training. Ziva likes being one of the guys--she dresses casually, even tomboyish quite a lot of the time, and doesn't wear a great amount of makeup or jewelry (aside from her necklace.)
Despite being not overly prideful in her appearance, Ziva is very comfortable in her sexuality and has absolutely no problem with flirting or teasing or using her looks and body to her benefit--and as time goes by she starts to get more and more feminine with her self-expression.
She's devoted to her family, problem there being there's really only one of them left. Tali was killed by a suicide bomber when she was 16 (it's unclear how old Ziva was, but she says she was already in Mossad at the time, so there was probably four to five years between the girls,) an event which impacted Ziva dramatically. She considered her sister to be better than her, more innocent and pure, which smacks of her having had her first kill mission already--despite being very good at what she does and sometimes resorting to it first, Ziva does not like killing. Ari, her older half-brother, went rogue...despite being hateful and kind of crazy, Ziva loved Ari and wanted to protect him. It's evident that Ari loved Ziva as well, they went through very similar grooming and training by their father, and while he hates Eli passionately, he wouldn't be able to direct the same fury towards his sister. Her mother is almost never mentioned, it's unknown whether she's alive or dead.
Ziva's relationship with her father is complicated. He's the one who made her what she is--a skilled Mossad agent, assassin, spy. All of her skills are thanks to Eli David's careful rearing of his children, and she does not thank him for it. Up until being sent to NCIS in 2005, though, Ziva followed his orders loyally. In that year though, she was sent with orders to kill Ari in order to gain Gibbs' confidence. She still hasn't forgiven him for the order--which she did end up carrying out against her own intentions, but only to save Gibbs' life. Despite her anger at her father, Ziva holds family in high regard, and does care for him. But she doesn't think of him as a father figure anymore, and has instead focused on Gibbs to fill that role.
Taught as she was, with her formative childhood years taken up by training to make her an ideal Mossad officer, and without having experienced adult life outside the military or Mossad, Ziva can be a bit awkward socially and emotionally. She doesn't often talk about any of her feelings, and tends towards secrecy. While she does function pretty well socially, she also tends towards keeping other people at a distance, especially early on when she just came to NCIS. She tends to be blunt with most people--an exception is with children or people who have just lost family members, and even so she doesn't feel entirely comfortable talking with them. She doesn't see the value in mincing words unless there's something that needs to be kept secret--despite her preference for being straightforward, she is very capable of misdirection and keeping secrets. She's also capable of making healthy emotional connections--she's friends with the whole team at NCIS, though it's unclear how many friends she's made outside work. But the ones she has made, she is fiercely protective of and cares for greatly.
Aside from her bluntness, Ziva is also not incredibly patient by nature. She can be, but she prefers to to take an active role--whether it's being undercover and investigating, or being part of a strike team. She's not good with sitting around and waiting. Sometimes this extends to a bit of a playful and childish nature that she shows when she's comfortable around someone, such as in the episode "Heartland" where she and McGee run into Gibbs' father, and the two race to be the first to tell Abby and Tony. She also likes to tease and joke with people she considers friends (notably, she very rarely does so with any of the Mossad agents she's been partners with, this treatment is usually reserved for the rest of the NCIS team.)
Ziva is also very proud of her heritage, her country, and her religion. She always wears a gold Star of David necklace--she says in one episode she'd rather die than take it off. The only time it's removed is when it's forcibly taken from her or she absolutely has to remove it, though she prefers wearing it under clothing if it has to be concealed. She is far from an orthodox Jew, she doesn't adhere to kosher practice, nor does she regularly go to Temple. Despite no obvious religious tendencies, Ziva has stated that she believes in ghosts, spirits, and demons--things that can't be seen or explained by science.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Highly trained special operations agent. Ziva was a member of the Mossad, specifically the Kidon unit which specialized in assassinations, paramilitary operations, infiltration, sabotage, and other such less-than-morally-perfect operations meant to keep Israel safe from threats to its people. She knows about fifty ways to kill with just about anything she can lay a hand on. She's strong, she's intimidating, and she's ruthless when she needs to be. She's a crack shot with a gun, knows explosives and military ordinance from a combination of mandatory military service and her Mossad training, and is an expert in hand-to-hand fighting (specifically Krav Maga, which is based in grappling and street fighting) who can take down men bigger and stronger than she is.
+ Fluent in Spanish, French (Standard and Belgian), Arabic, English, Turkish, and Hebrew (native language). Also speaks basic German, Italian, and Russian.
+ Loyal/Protective. Once you have Ziva's allegance, you have it pretty much without restraint. That doesn't mean she will blindly follow orders, but if she seriously believes someone is right, she will do whatever she can to protect and assist them.
+ Observant. Going in with her skill set as a special operations agent, Ziva is very observant of her surroundings and of other people. She can be tricked, but once she's on her guard it's hard to do so.
+ Music. She has a fantastic singing voice, and can play the piano. She also used to dance ballet. She usually uses these skills when going undercover.
- Emotional State. Ziva can come off as being cold and uncaring sometimes, just because of the way she acts and speaks. She tends to be blunt and won't hold back information for the sake of making people feel better. Sometimes she seems like she can't understand why people get angry with her for this. She definitely is surprisingly well-adjusted considering what's happened in her past, but she also doesn't really show what's bothering her a lot of the time, at least until it's 'safe' for her to do so. Usually this happens around other members of Team Gibbs--especially Gibbs, whom she considers to be a father figure. She wants security and stability, and a family that cares for her.
- Idioms and Expressions. Ziva sometimes doesn't understand idioms and expressions, and sometimes gets them wrong. Which is pretty much played for humor, and it's implied that she actually gets them wrong on purpose sometimes.
- Trust issues. Especially after what just happened with Michael (a fellow Mossad officer she cared for) and Tony, her father's training, and her relationship with her father in general, Ziva has trouble either trusting people, or allowing herself to forgive people who she percieves as having betrayed her. This is the reason she stayed behind in Israel at the end of season 6, and also the reason that she cut off contact with her father after that point, when she's brought back to America.
- Technology. That's not to say she's completely tech-challenged--she's not Gibbs--but Ziva does get frustrated when it doesn't work, which shows that she really wouldn't know how to fix things that break. Basic functions, she can figure out on her own. Most everything else, she asks McGee to help her. She'd much rather be out chasing down leads and kicking suspect ass than dealing with the computer angle.

First Person Sample:
[The video feed snaps on after a bit of experimentation, showing a woman sitting with her back firmly to the wall of one of the New Bark houses. She looks exhausted, worn, her hair a tangled mess--not injured, though the way she's looking around warily gives the impression that she definitely wasn't expecting that. Her clothing is torn and stained, but actually clean--she wasn't expecting that either. When she speaks, it's with an accent: Middle Eastern sounding, almost, and she sounds as tired as she looks.]
If this is some kind of trick...
[She may be tired, but there is a bit of bite to her voice--as if she can make good on the implied threat if pressed to.]
I do not take well to deception. Or to being moved without my knowledge to an unknown location.
[There's been enough of that lately, though she's not going to go further into it--and honestly, this is a lot better than where she was. But she's too practiced in keeping all information to herself that may give the upper hand (or show weakness) in any situation.]
That woman is not my mother. If she has told so many that, it would seem that at least we have so much in common.
[Her eyes slip closed for a moment, gathering thoughts and wondering how much she can afford to give away.]
Abby...if you are truly here...
Third Person Sample:
First rule of waking up to find yourself in an unfamiliar situation--make yourself familiar with it. Ziva had methodically examined the room she found herself in, not caring to make it discreet that she had done so. What she found confused her--nothing to suggest that this was anything but the bedroom of a young child, nothing to indicate whether who belonged here was a boy or a girl. There was a stairwell in the corner, implying that this room was the only one on the floor. The second, judging from the view out the window.
She had obviously been treated for the injuries inflicted by her captors, perhaps drugged into rest since she could not recall it happening and obviously quite a bit of time had passed--she felt merely tired, not like she had been tortured for weeks. Ulman had been exceedingly cautious, but only to the point of not having to waste time and resources on medical care. Whoever had her now wasn't concerned with that. She felt fine.
The stairs in the corner were the only exit from the room that did not involve going out a window--she took them rapidly, nearly slamming into the woman at the base of the stairs before reeling backwards and away. "Who are you."
If Tony was here, he would make some kind of remark about backsliding--forgetting to put proper inflections in her voice when asking questions. He was not, though, even if a pang of hurt went through her chest at the realization. She was alone in Somalia, why would it be different now?
The woman had a backpack in her hands, which she shoved at Ziva. "Good luck on your journey today, honey! You don't want to be late!"
"What are you talking--" Before Ziva could finish demanding answers, though, she felt herself being pushed out the door which locked solidly behind her. "What is going on here?!"
