Seems like the HCL sequel is not going to happen after all. At least not with Daniel MacIvor's script. Or, well, with his script maybe, but it's not quite what we thought it would be.
He posted this in
his blog today.
That’s a screen grab from a Leslie Spit Treeo video from a thousand years ago. Today we’re doing a reading of “Trigger” the screenplay. Marilyn is probably the anthiesis of her character Vic. “Trigger” is a story about two women Vic and Kat - old childhood friends and former partners in a somewhat successful band back in the day who have been estranged for ten years and now come back together for a benefit. I wrote the parts for Tracy and Molly Parker. Molly flew up from LA for the reading and we’re going to spend the day reading and talking about the script with Bruce MacD. who is directing and Jennifer Jonas who will be producing. I feel like the script is pretty close but I’m up for feedback and feeling fluid about the possibilities.
So. That's what he meant with "rewrite". I mean, it still does sound like an awesome movie. But. Yeah.
ETA: So, okay, I was curious. Since when exactly was Daniel MacIvor blogging about this. In case anyone else is interested:
All his 'HCL2' entires up to now (relevant parts only):
Saturday, November 10, 2007Had a great breakfast meeting this morning about a film project that is very exciting but I can’t really talk about, other than to say someone named Bruce and someone named Callum are involved - plus … but if I said any more it would give it away.
Saturday, December 8, 2007Yesterday met with Bruce McD about the screenplay idea which appears to be going ahead. It’s called “45’s” - and that’s all I’ll say for now.
Sunday, December 9, 2007Tomorrow I’m hoping I’m actually going to find the time to work on the “Communion” play, after I get though revamping the outline and a couple of scenes of the “45’s” screenplay.
Tuesday, December 18, 2007Also today I have to finish my treatment of the film idea I’m working on with Bruce MacDonald... So why am I posting here? Excellent question.
Wednesday, December 19, 2007Been sitting at Insomnia Internet Cafe all day basically - internet still down at the house - finishing all the details for the application that has to go in for Bruce’s movie. The funding board actually wants a “Script Research Proposal”. Um. Research? Okay. I listed: write, listen to music, get down on my knees and thank God for the chance to write this great project. I guess prayer doesn’t count as research but what the hell. I hope the money comes through. If I was charging for writing what a carpenter would charge for building a table I’d have a couple of wheelbarrow’s of cash now. Of course it’s not about the money but life costs cash. Speaking of wanting things: don’t ever. Once I got myself excited over the TV story editing idea all communication stopped. Alas. And hence: want nothing.
Tuesday, January 29, 2008Since I’ve been in Toronto I’ve been writing on the screenplay I’m developing for Bruce MacD and also I wrote an article for a publication out of Playwright’s Workshop Montreal which is focusing on theatre criticism.
Tuesday, February 5, 2008 ... 45 notebook: for this and somethings else. [...]
Thursday, February 28, 2008Now I begin writing 45’s, the screenplay for Bruce McD. I’ve already done quite a bit of work on it and so far it’s feeling a flow. All good.
[...]
Tomorrow I’m off to Montreal where I’ll continue with 45’s and begin working with the first year acting students at the National Theatre School.
Wednesday, March 5, 2008I’m actually writing two things at the same time right now. I’m finishing the screenplay for Bruce McD and working on the first draft of the play for the National Theatre School.
Saturday, April 19, 2008Tomorrow I finished the treatment for “45’s”.
(As Mary pointed out, my positive thinking is invading my tenses!)
Monday, April 21, 2008Met with Bruce McD last night and he gave me some more room to finish the treatment which is great since this “life” thing keeps getting in the way of work.
Friday, April 18, 2008In the meantime there’s a new treatment due for Bruce McD and all that “life” stuff to contend with.
Tuesday, July 15, 2008Multi-tasking once again. Had to do notes on my notes to the treatment of “45’s”. So basically I write the treatment and write notes on what’s wrong with the treatment.Ah bureaucracy, gotta love it.
Thursday, June 19, 2008Also looks like there will be (hopefully) a workshop of “45’s” - the other screenplay - at the end of July if everybody’s schedule clicks.
Thursday, September 11, 2008Meanwhile Larry the cat yowls in the background in confused and inconsolable grief AND I find out fifteen minutes ago that I have to fly to Montreal for the day on Saturday to meet with the actors for a reading of the “45’s” screenplay.
Sunday, September 21, 2008 The 45ers
Reading of the screenplay today in Montreal. Went very well. Good notes. Seems we’re a go. More on this tomorrow.
Monday, September 22, 2008In the evenings I’m going to start working on the “45’s” rewrite. I’m back at the fundamental questions: what do they want, what happens next etc. All that script doctor stuff. It’s like theatrical dramaturgy which also gives me indigestion. I’m not sure why I resist answering those questions so much. It it my weakness or my instinct? In some ways I worry because once I start putting things inside a formula the life starts to drain from it. I will move slowly through.
Monday, December 22, 2008Had a great meeting with Bruce McD tonight about our project together. Lots of changes but all for the best. After the meeting we ate good soup and marveled at the skill of a 5 and 3/4 year old at getting “just one present” to open early.
Saturday, January 17, 2009On Monday I officially begin my residency at University of Guelph and on Tuesday I begin rewrites for Bruce McD’s movie.
Thursday, January 22, 2009Moving through a re-write on Bruce’s screenplay, once called “45’s” and now called … something else, I’ll keep that under wraps for now. Exciting changes and good work.
Tuesday, January 27, 2009Working on Bruce’s script and hoping to have that together by week end and then work on “Eugene” the screenplay I’m writing with Amnon B.
Wednesday, February 25, 2009Focus of work the next few days is finishing the draft of the screepaly for Bruce, now called “Trigger”.
Saturday, February 28, 2009Today trying to do some work on “Trigger” while packing for Regina tomorrow and waiting for CAA to show up to replace my dead battery.
Regina, Tuesday, March 3, 2009On the sunny side of things: I finished the rewrite of “Trigger” yesterday. For now.
Monday, January 11, 2010This week I do a rewrite of the screenplay “Trigger” that I’ve written for Bruce MacD. We’re hoping to have a reading at the end of the month before I start rehearsing for “Communion”. These film things can go at the drop of a hat. Not that it’s a “go” yet but it’s getting closer. I’d be happy to be doing some film work again, haven’t actuallly shot anything since Amnon B. and I did “Whole New Thing” a few years ago.
Sunday, January 17, 2010 Tracy as Marilyn
