The other day, I was asked to have a look at a Nintendo DS portable game machine. It wouldn't power up, and it wouldn't charge the lithium-ion battery. My son's on about his fourth DS, and countless phones.
The idea of "longevity" or "fixing something" just doesn't occur 8-(

OTOH, I have at least got him to strip down a couple of printers now, all on his own. Maybe we'll even get him to drive their motors off an IQ3 board or something.

Well, if you still have the three dead DS machines, I have the special "tri-wing" screwdriver to get them open. And a set of spudgers. It seems that fuse failures are quite common, possibly due to momentary shorts in the flexible wiring in the display.
