I used to watch Mr. Rogers all the time. Listening to him in this speech, I really wish I had watched him more. Shit, I think I might benefit from watching him now.
Of all the contrivances of attitude and intellegentsia in our current culture, one of the worst has to be our open hostility towards and rejection of earnestness and passion. We are far more interested in histrionics or hipster apathay or meta-cynicism than in anyone's expression of heartfelt concern and interest.
It's definitely not cool to care, and it's unforgivable to be earnest. What callow creatures we've become.
