From two weeks ago:
Sitting in Jack's Java Cove, probably the best hangout type place Swainsboro's had in a while, and, of course, no one's here. It's depressing the way things come to Swainsboro every once in a while with the potential to provide the Town Stuck In 1959 with some kind of culture, or, at the very least, an alternative to a Mexican restaurant or parking lot, in terms of gathering places.
What have I been up to... got my new TV. It's bitchin. Totally boss... finally saw The Departed. Entertaining from beginning to end, for sure, but I don't know if it's best picture material. And it's certainly not the work Scorcese should've gotten Best Director for. That shit was a long time coming to Marty, so I kind of see it as a "You Deserve It" kind of Oscar from the Academy, more than a recognition of the merit of The Departed. If you don't think so, go watch Taxi Driver. That's filmmaking.
Yeah I typed that up sitting at Jack's. No real reason to hang onto it other than to show that I hadn't completely given up on internet things.
In the time since, I've come back to Athens to get ready for the summer semester. I've got classes starting back on the 7th, work starting up on the 11th, followed by Richard's bachelor party (whatever the hell it may be) on the 14th, the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner for the wedding the following day and the wedding that Saturday. Busy couple of weeks, fer shure.
AAAaaaand I'm going to see Tool tomorrow. Ready for that. Although I don't feel as excited as I thought I would. It'll probably hit me the minute the lights go down or whatever before they start playing.
Funny story: Richard and I are in Borders yesterday. Looking through books, browsing, you know. All's quiet.
Then, a cell phone shatters the quiet. It's loud, but it's muffled.
"now walk it out, now walk it out, now walk it out"
Me and Richard look up at each other and just kind of sigh, then turn to see who's responsible.
Sound's still muffled, tucked away somewhere, and there's your typical cross section of people in the open area away from the shelves. College girls, dudes, adults, kids.
A middle-aged woman. Teacher looking. Gray hair. Wearing a vest. She reaches into her purse, WASP, salt-of-the-earth husband by her side. She pulls out a phone.
"now walk it out. now walk IT OUT. NOW WALK IT OUT. NOW WALK IT OUT"
"Hello?" as nasally southern as the world has ever known, this school teacher.
I have never had to try so hard to not laugh. Richard spins and hides his face in the corner. I reach for the shelf to hold myself up and snort violently trying to be quiet.
So, in my trip to Borders yesterday, I got the lowdown on the Harry Potter release at Borders. There will be a party at Borders up til midnight for the release, at which time Anna and I will purchase our copies for right around 21 dollah. I know there will be some UGA students there dressing up, if only a few, as I can remember some be-robed individuals at the midnight showing of Goblet.
Course, there will be kids, I'm sure. Lots of them, it being summer. But, it should still be good fun and I'll be there living it up as best as can be done in a bookstore full of petulant (i LOVE that word) children and short-tempered soccer moms. Flasks, anyone? I'm loading up with Dewars.
Man, I gotta get a new picture of myself on this thing.
By the way, if you've never heard of Vitas... you need to go to YouTube RIGHT. NOW. Search for Vitas. And click on the first result, I think that's the right one. You'll know because he's the shaved head dude in black and red. And prepare yourself. Really.
How's everyone's summer faring?
