You know... I SAID I'd write more on AWA later. But if you're reading this, you were probably there. Plus, I've scrambled out from under the reading, the writing, the academic torment for a few precious minutes, so I don't have the time for a full rundown. Suffice it to say, the con was pretty OK, the people were super, and the Ifrit Dance was ( Read more... )

Are you kidding me? There's actually a thingy called 'White Writer / Black Characters'?

Part of me is actually kind of insulted, like we can't be every day people like anyone else? *is a little confuzzled* D00d, hop on AIM and explain it to me. *hughughug*

Well, see, basically, the class is all about authenticity in characters. Can a white writer accurately portray a black person? Do you have to be a member of a race to understand it? Alot of the class is looking back at different works in different times. We've read Uncle Tom's Cabin, two apartheid era South African books, and now we're working on a novel that moves through, I'm guessing, the '30s to the '50s. So, these works come at times when it was easier to identify only a few kinds of archetypes of black people because they were forced into these roles. My argument has been that as time passes and black people are given more and more freedom to take on any and all stations in life, it becomes harder to say "well, this is authentic" or "this isn't true" because one, obviously there's all kinds of people, no matter the race, and two, there's far, far less influence on black people to be every other race's conception of "the black person ( ... )

And this is why every white person should have at least [one] good black friend. I'm sitting here now chuckling because for a lot of my friends [whom, oddly enough, are mostly white], I'm that person.

Feel free to ask me stuff. I'm one of those 'educated two snaps up' black women, but unlike 95% of [them], I [don't] get offended easily. ^_^

I swear, I'm really not that quiet, boring guy that was at AWA. Lack of sleep combined with all those hours of walking and standing around made me into something not so far removed from a zombie. Seriously, two nights of sleeping on a strange, lumpy pile of pillows and cushions on the floor of the Doubletree mutilated me.

This horrible week is coming to a close soon. Tomorrow I take an English exam and a Portuguese exam and the worst is through. Still got reading left, but that's not nearly the problem this massive poetry test is going to be.

But at Steak and Shake, i was half asleep myself, and was trying hard not to nod off while the other girls kept talking. XDD

You're learning Portugese? Nice! ^^
Foreign languages are fun.

I suppose that's the thing about cons and cosplayers: if you really want to get to know one, you'd better hope they haven't been on their feet all day ( ... )
