Rina Telcontar edged through the busy Cafeteria, carrying a tray of what was supposedly edible food. Spotting an empty table nearby, she quickly sat down at it and began to eat. Though this was technically her break, she had brought some of her papers with her anyway, and took them out to have a glance over, though not without a wry smile.
Eight years an Agent, she thought, and I still haven’t learned to treasure the free time I get.
She jumped as another Agent arrived, this one several years younger, who grinned widely as she flung herself down in a seat. “Hello.”
Rina smiled back. “Hello, Galeya. They finally assigned you, then?”
“Yep.” The younger girl showed off her flashpatch proudly. “I’m in Floaters.” Her face fell slightly. “They said I’m not allowed in Bad Slash ‘til I’m older.”
“Probably a good thing,” Rina replied. “You’re hardly an adult.”
Galeya made a face. “I bet they’re doing it to be awkward. But then I’m just glad I got assigned at all.”
“You shouldn’t be surprised. You’ve been nagging them for the past five years.” This was answered with a cheeky grin.
The two girls had been rescued ten years ago from a LOTR badfic in which they had been uncanonical daughters of Aragorn and Arwen. They had been sent down to the Nursery, where twelve-year-old Rina had immediately begun Agent training. She had adamantly refused to go into any Department where there was the possibility of her having to kill someone or even just getting violent, which ruled out Action altogether, and so had been placed in the Department of Finance when she turned fourteen. This had proven an excellent choice, and she (oddly enough) really enjoyed her job.
Galeya, on the other hand, had been five when she was saved, but grew up with an enormous respect for the Action Agents. She had become friends with Marsha, the teenaged Triceratops who had been placed in the Nursery some time before, and through her had met the veteran Slashers Trojie and Pads, who had eventually become her heroes. Ever since then, Galeya had wanted to become a Slasher herself, and had put in repeated requests to be made an official Agent. She was only fifteen now, though, which was probably why she had been put in Floaters.
Both Agents ate in silence for a while before Rina recalled something. “Have you been assigned a partner yet?”
“Not that I know of,” Galeya replied. “But they’re most likely going to be waiting for me when I get to my RC. Probably be some newbie recruit who’s never so much as picked up a weapon before.” She shrugged and kept eating.
Rina tried not to smile at her little sister’s world-weary air. Finishing off her meal, she put her papers away and stood up. “I’d better get back to Finance. I’ll see you later, and take care of yourself, all right?”
The new Floater nodded. “You too. Meet you here?”
“Yes, and you can tell me all about your first mission, and who your partner is and all that sort of thing.”
Galeya grinned again. “All right. Bye!”
“Bye.” Rina headed off into a nearby crowd, leaving a fairly elated new Agent behind.
