Greetings. I am new to this community and have only recently discovered Wilby Wonderful and am falling in love with Callum Keith Rennie despite being aware of him for years. All of a sudden, Duck McDonald is causing me to rethink everything I ever thought of RayK and Leoben.
I have a question about the movie Wilby Wonderful and would love to hear some opinions about it.
Here is my question: Did Buddy know that Duck's name would be listed in The Sentinel? One would assume so since (1) Buddy knows pretty much everything that goes on and (2) Buddy would
have been at least one of the arresting officers, if not the primary one, since the Mayor mentions at one point that Buddy is in charge of the investigation.
So Buddy has to know that Duck will be mentioned in the list, right?
Yet when Duck goes to talk to Buddy (when Buddy is waiting for Sandra to
get off work) and Duck is sitting in the car with him and tries to talk
about people who will be hurt, Buddy looks at him and asks him who will be
hurt. Buddy has to know that Duck is one of them. And Buddy has to know
that Duck knows that Buddy knows. Right? So why does Buddy just blow it
all off and show no concern for Duck? Why does Buddy ask Duck who will be hurt as if Buddy is wondering why Duck is concerned about the scandal when it must be the case that Buddy is fully aware that Duck is about to be outed? I do understand the Duck is concerned for Dan, not himself, but one would think that Buddy would be concerned for Duck.
Or maybe everyone on Wilby already knows about Duck and that's why
Buddy isn't concerned for Duck? But that doesn't really work. We
get no indication that any one in town views Duck as "one of them
goddamn queers". Or is it just that the townspeople, like Irene the gossip,
reserve their hatred of gays for non-island gays?
Does the town know that Duck is gay? Does Buddy? (Buddy has to,
because of the arrests if for no other reason.) Does Sandra?
Thank you kindly.
