So, the good. All but one of the characters were convincing with the martial arts, which is an important first step in getting the visuals right ( Read more... )

Yeah, for a while, I've been hearing about this, and I've basically thrown up my hands and given up on the whole thing.

Did they change the names a bit? Yue/Ua, Zuko/Zukho, Iroh/Ihro?

I was more worried about Aang's actor, since all the previews showed him as being /oh so wooden/, but if it's Katara, that's almost worse.

I've been watching the Rotten Tomatoes rating bounce from 4-6% for most of the day. So much ouch.

I didn't see how they spelled them in the credits, but pronunciations were occasionally slightly different. No great harm.
The fact that they looked primarily for caucasian actors didn't help, but there's been plenty of attention on that.

Aang's actor did a reasonably nice job. There was a wonderful sequence with him and Zuko that reminded me very much of how he moved in the cartoon. Really, Aang's actor even did ok looking the part. The real problem with him came whenever he opened his mouth. 70% of that was that the dialogue writing was horrible, 30% was that even when given something to work with, he couldn't emote convincingly.

Katara was much, much worse though.

Princess Yue to become the main villan? Have they changed something completely from cartoon to movie?

As for the rest of this, I was not expecting anything great to come from the movie, perhaps something decent, but now with what you've written, I've lost all small hope I had for it.

No. Princess Yue's actress turns in the best performance in the movie. She has real chemistry with Sokha - which we sadly only get a couple brief scenes of. More of those two and playing up the tragic love bit would have given the film some emotional impact - which the two leads totally failed to do, and was not provided by Zuko due to Saymalan's bad directing timing and choices.

Azula was the second best actress, or actor, in the movie. If there is /any/ hope for the future films, its that in the one line and one chance to emote they give Azula in her 5 seconds of screen time, she nails the character. Best scene of the film.
