Charles, on the other hand, had been sleeping very well since those pajamas had disappeared, turned to ash at the bottom of the trash can in the men's locker room by the pool, aided in their fiery demise by judicious application of ouzo and some cigarette lighter fluid.
He rolled over, arm flopping over his eyes. "Mmzuh? What is it, honey?"
Clearly he hadn't been awake, but it wasn't as though Camilla hadn't known that when she asked. Are you awake was one of those rhetorical questions. If you asked it, the true answer was probably no.
"Charles, I think people are stealing things. From my room." She sounded Very Anxious Indeed, and not sleepy in the slightest.
Whoop. Charles was instantly awake, though he willed his body not to tense. He pretended to yawn. "What makes you think that, Milly? Something missing?"
Okay, it was a dumb question. Time, he needed to buy time to think.
Lying on her side facing her brother, Camilla watched him yawn. She felt not the slightest bit of remorse for waking him. "Yes. Things are missing. I can't find my pajamas. And one of the cards from my deck is missing too." In reality she'd used the card for a bookmark and somewhere in the airport it'd fallen out of the book as she carried it.
