"We will return/so also this island" - Gaido's restaurant, the Seawall, Galveston

Something in me changed last week. Since my last post about the storm, I had an intense moment of emotional catharsis, and never really came back from it. After a week of looking at the storm from behind glass, I crashed and saw it for what it was. The lives it ruined. The homes it took. The people it killed (now 60 in the U.S., even more in Cuba ( Read more... )

It's...really bad, to put it lightly. I think people up here are of the "well, it's not as bad as Katrina" mentality, but anyone from the Gulf Coast knows that's bullshit.

Here's a somewhat terrible and humorous analogy that is in no way designed to make light of the situation, but it's what I could come up with without offensively invoking other disasters. Put it this way: saying something isn't as bad as Katrina is like saying someone isn't as awesome as Gary Oldman. Gary Oldman being the pinnacle of awesome, this leaves a lot of leeway. NPH is really really awesome, but he's not that awesome. HOWEVER, we would both agree that his awesomeness is still very significant.

In the same way, Ike isn't as bad as Katrina, because nothing can be. But it's still very significantly bad.

Anyway...apparently things like this make me very vocal. Thanks for the love. I'm looking forward to yogurt more than you can imagine!

I've got to do some moving stuff with my new roommate this evening, but I'm thinking I'll be free by 8pm (and the Office is at 9, right?) so not much time, but it's something. Will that work for you? I'll give you a call later when I'm leaving my place.

That analogy actually makes perfect sense to me. : /

8 pm should be great...there's a free food event on campus we're going to try to hit up at 7, hah. Call when you're in the area. Good luck with moving!
