Got my Buffy Card Suspended

Tonight, UPN was airing a Buffy repeat that I'd seen at least a few times; but apparently TOTALLY missed a couple of major points. I never realized that Anya's death was foretold from the beginning of the season in the episode "Selfless". When Anya's return to being a Vengeance Demon results in the the slaughter of a frathouse full of guys, she ( Read more... )

I know both actresses asked to leave the show. And death, being ever so temporary yet necessary for the show, would not be an end for the characters had the show(s) continued.

Also, both shows were in a holding pattern for getting renewed for a new season as the those episodes were being written, I believe?

At least Cordy got to say "Goodbye"...

According to Charisma Carpenter, she most definitely did NOT ask to leave the show. At the end of the previous season, she went on maternity leave fully expecting to resume on the 5th season of Angel towards the end of the summer. She said she was never even contacted and that only after she inquired about her status, she was told that the show had decided to go in a new direction so they wouldn't me renewing her contract. By that time, Cordy's character had been so muddled up, I can see how TPTB didn't think they were losing much. Joss decided near the 100th episode that the character of Cordelia had been unjustly discarded and decided to wrap up her story and celebrate the show's 100th episode in one fell swoop. Charisma never really talked about how things happened until after the episode ( ... )

Wow, different than my information about Cordy, definitely. Though the character had been screwed up, imho... I hated to see her go. Now I'm doubley sad to learn that she was kicked out? :-( :-( (see, doubly sad!)

I can't attest to the validity of the source but this is similar to what I'd read about Emma/Anya: http://forum.buffyworld.com/archive/index.php/t-4452.html

But I'll state again: death is rarely final in the Buffyverse.

I'll just keep quiet now. :-)

Well, that source regarding Emma was at the end of January...I know that Whedon/Gellar had made it official that it was the last season not very long after that. By that January, I would suspect that the entire cast had been speculated on whether or not they'd still be up for an eighth season or not. There are places in the commentary episodes "Selfless" and "Chosen" on the DVDs where Joss and other directors and writers make reference to that transition from plans for the show if it continued, and how to wrap it up up if it didn't. Whedon said he knew from the beginning of the season that if it was the last season, the show would end with the awakening of all potential slayers, and the big final battle. Kinda sad that, any of the reformed baddies were going to die (Spike/Anya). Andrew and Faith were "human ( ... )
