Another, broader request

I am definitely still looking for undergrad-friendly pieces on the following topics:
  • activism/political change (including "how to")
  • the ways in which individuals construct and reconstruct racial categories and systems
  • sexuality/gender & race
  • race & criminal justice
  • race & employment
Academic articles are good (if not TOO dense), but I also welcome well- ( Read more... )

race, help me lj you're my only hope, academia, teaching

It looks like you're going to have to use the term "white privilege" at some point; cut right to the chase with "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack".

Yeah, I found that one when I was looking for the original, but it doesn't really fit with this class. Maybe I can provide it to them for the days on race & sexuality, though.

In the blogosphere, I like the original posts of Stuff White People Like - it nails middle class white culture and gives "tips" on how to exploit these tidbits in order to appropriate whiteness. It was way better before the original blogger got a book deal, but meh ( ... )

I know, I'm totally basing it off a combination of names and the crappy student ID pictures. I'm hoping I have more students whom I'm initially not reading correctly! One of their initial assignments asks about different forms of socialization, and one of the question sets asks about race and ethnic identity. Inevitably, most of the white students answer the question "Have you ever been treated differently because of your race and/or ethnicity?" with a resounding "no". By the end of the class, most of them wisen up to the point, and say, "yes - because I am white I am treated as one is brought up to expect in a given situation. It is because I am not seen as different that I am treated differently than those who are seen as other." Ok, maybe not that eloquent, but something along those lines. Anyway, those questions give me a good read on the racial/ethnic backgrounds of the class. I'm just very used to a much more overt mix of students!

Race and the military currently or historically?

I can provide some references on race during WWII (and there are a lot of parallels between racial segregation and the current refusal to allow openly gay soldiers that would be great discussion fodder).
