House stuff, lots of rambling

Kitchen adventureI tried out a pot roast recipe in our brand new crock pot. I printed out a highly reviewed recipe from AllRecipes.com, bought the ingredients and prepared everything last night to cook today. I never pay attention to serving size because I figure that I can use the leftovers. HOWEVER...the recipe makes 8 servings. My crock pot ( Read more... )

So many things to comment on! (1) I just got a crock pot as well and have been trying to find a good recipe for me to make my first foray into crock pot cooking. If you do decide that you did like your pot roast, would you mind sharing your recipe with me? Or if you find anything else you like better please let me know ( ... )

Weird. Peter just made crock-pot pot roast last week for the first time. I just thought it was ehhh. Definitely agree with you on the stringy meat. Peter has made pot raost before in a dutch oven-type pot in the oven, and it's come out much better that way. The strange thing for us was that we expected to carrots and potatoes to be really tender, but they weren't at all. Hmm. I think I'll stick to using the crock pot for soups, stews and chili.

I'm so envious that you have a home to call all your own. You're right; it totally sucks to be looking for a place. At this point, I just want to be able to go home and know that OUR home together and feel settled and secure. Sigh.

I'm afraid to adjust my favorite beef stew recipe because I'm afraid of ruining it in my crock pot. I read on a message board that some crock pots run hot, which is what I suspect is happening with me. I guess I'll have to make several batches of food in the crock pot to figure out which setting is the best.

The house search is no fun at all. But, once it's all over, there's nothing like walking into *your* house for the first time! Good luck!

Hi Abby!

I skimmed off a lot of the fat in the pot roast, and it tasted much better. Here is the recipe: http://beef.allrecipes.com/az/GrlicTpSirlinPtRst.asp

A few tips: use the top sirloin roast. I used a regular chuck roast and I think that's why my roast came out so oily. Also, if your crock pot has less than 8-10 serving capacity, you can cut down on the veggies. I used only one onion and one green bell pepper.

We're also trying to build up our savings again. I've drained so much of my savings account for the wedding, and now property taxes are coming up as well.
