This post makes me miss knitting ... and I have no good excuse for not doing it in this short blissful period before school starts up. But I'm glad to see you're keeping active. And hey, I want to see pix of the crossword afghan!!!

Also, when my family & I were in NYC we went to Point yarn shop/cafe (http://www.thepointnyc.com/), which I don't think you mentioned in your list of LYSs, and it's very cute and close to NYU. Okay, a lot of the yarn was inaccessible to humans of average height, which was weird, but it's a cafe AND a yarn store IN ONE! And the lemon bars are good. Really good.
