I bought a mandolin today, and it seems like everything's pretty much cool with existence now. It's not solely because of the mandolin, but it definitely doesn't hurt. It's a cheap one from Fender, and it's in pack form, like the banjo was, so it comes with treats, like a little lesson book, some extra strings, picks and a strap. And a tuner. If ( Read more... )

You should get one. Everyone should have an assortment of musical instruments around the house, whether they can play them or not.

stuff like this gives people like me a chance to try out different stuff on an instrument that's inexpensive enough to go out on a limb for, but quality enough that it's not discouraging to play

That was the mistake I made with my $10 eBay mandolin. It was so cheap that it only made me realise I needed a better one. It's cracked, and I had to attack the bridge with my Dremel so I could come remotely close to touching the strings to the neck. But I totally learned my three chords and now I need a decent one.
