Is there any chance that one could find a clipped x-ref, which was moved outside the clip area in the original drawing? (The polyline defining the clip is invisible, and i can't click on xref -> delete clip since i don't see it)

hello!
You could use quick select (QSELECT) to select it, then invoke the xclip command to unclip it.

Or detach and reattach.

Or (not that I suggest this, but...) hatch a giant polyline in the base file and see if the hatch shows up in the host file! ha!
