While what you say is true (and I do agree that there is a single All That Is that we are all one part of), we still have individual egos with definite emotional states. If you want to love someone else you must be able to place yourself in love. You must be able to love yourself.
I find this easier to explain with happiness, and the logic does not change. If you want to be happy in a group, you must first be happy yourself. It does no good to surround yourself with happy people if you are miserable. Yes, you can count on others to pick you up a bit but this is truly a helping hand; being happy yourself is ultimately the responsibility of the individual. From there it is possible to be happy in a group.
