It was raining. There was little for him to do in this weather. He didn't like looking at the droplets hitting the window. It was too depressing. So he sat on his bed, waiting for something to happen, hoping the sun would win its neverending battle with the clouds.
The last thing he was expecting was a visitor. So when the nurse entered the room, and announced a guest, he could feel a warm wave of happiness fill him. No one ever came to see him. The unexpected surprise brought a glimmer of a tear to his eye.
Snape walked into the room, closing the door behind him.
“Good day, Gilderoy.”
Lockhart stayed quiet, still awed at his visitor.
Snape moved closer to Lockhart and took one of his hands between his.
“I know things haven't been easy for you lately. You must feel lonely. But life has been rather busy for everyone, and I couldn't exactly find the time to come visit earlier. I'm sorry.”
Lockhart's eyes were fixed on Snape's twisting lips, hanging on to every word they let escape.
“I brought you something,” Snape pulled something out of his pocket. It was a small, flat purple bar. He handed it to Lockhart.
“I love chocolate,” he finally said. Quickly, but with quite some difficulty he opened the wrapper. He broke up a square and brought it to his lips. He licked it delicately, taking it all the flavours. Placing the chocolate in his mouth, he closed his eyes, and savoured the delicious treat.
He broke off another square and this time, devoured it within seconds. He could feel the cocoa stick to his teeth, and leave a bitter after-taste in his mouth. He knew this could be heaven. After eating two rows to himself, he looked up, to see a faint smile on his guest's face. Breaking off another piece, he handed it to Snape.
Snape took the chocolate, bowing his head in thanks. He held it in his hand, letting it melt between his fingers. After a few seconds, he placed the chocolate on the bed-side table, and moved his hand towards Lockhart.
Instinctively, Lockhart grabbed Snape's wrist, and licked the melted chocolate off the long fingers. Snape smiled.
“I see there are some things you can never forget.”
Lockhart heard the rain hitting the window as Snape left his room.
Since that day, every time the clouds take over from the sun, Gilderoy can feel the bitter taste of cocoa in his mouth.
