„That was a weak try, James Wilson, even for you.“
„Well, at least I tried.“
House stepped closer to Wilson’s desk, removing some of the charts laying there.
„What was that little pink thing you were trying to hide from me? A new bottle of nail polish?“
„Yeah. I bought it for Cuddy because I was going to bribe her into giving me a new office you would never be able to find.“ Wilson sighed and rubbed his forehead.
„A secret office? Sounds to me like you watched too much Harry Potter.“ A grin appeared on House’s face when he found the pink thing Wilson had been trying to hide when he entered the room.
„A tamagotchi? Interesting.“
„It’s not interesting, it belonged to a patient of mine.“
„Belonged?“
„She died.“
„And your first thought was to adopt the poor little creature who has lost its mommy.“, House said and stared at the little screen. „I can’t even identify what this is supposed to be… a duck?“
„House, I have work to do.“
The tamagotchi in House’s hand beeped and House glanced at the screen.
„It pooped.“
„Again?“
„Again??“ House looked at Wilson. „Don’t tell me you’ve paid attention to how often that thingy has emptied its intestines in the past few hours.“
Wilson rolled his eyes and held out his hand.
„Give it to me.“
„So that the head of oncology can clean up some tamagotchi poop?“
Wilson’s expression was serious.
„She made me promise I would take care of it after her death.“
„I’ll tell you something that might make your life easier: Dead people have no way of figuring out wether you kept a promise or not.“
„She was only 5 and I was her doctor for over a year. I’m the one she trusted with that tamagotchi, not her mother or her father.“
„You’re pathetic.“
„If pushing a few buttons a day is the only thing I need to do in order to keep the promise I made to a dying girl then I don’t care if I’m pathetic.“
The tamagotchi beeped again and Wilson started to feel slightly uncomfortable.
„Give it back.“
„Why are you holding on to it like that? Because Sam left you and you feel lonely?“
„Yes, exactly. That thing sleeps next to me in bed and we are having wonderful breakfast conversations, it’s almost like Sam never left. I’m wondering if I should propose to that tamagotchi anytime soon.“
„Well you still have the ring you bought for Sam, so if you wanna go for it…“
The tamagotchi beeped again, this time even louder. House looked at the screen.
„This little dude is really unhappy.“, House teased.
Wilson got up. „Okay, now give it to me.“
House tossed it at him and Wilson caught it.
„People die from cancer while you stand next to them holding their hands without being able to prevent it. Sam left you at a point in your relationship when you were thinking about having a family with her.“, House quietly said and walked towards the door, „But keeping alive some tiny computerpixels isn’t going to fix anything.“
Wilson waited until House had left his office before he let out a deep sigh and put the tamagotchi at the other end of the desk, away from him. Then he opened a chart and tried to concentrate on it.
The tamagotchi beeped again.
Wilson stopped writing into the chart and buried his face in his hands.
Another beep.
Wilson reached out and grabbed it, pushed some buttons, cleaned up the poop and fed it.
He had fixed it.
