Cognitive dissonance?
It's such a strange concept to me. It's a human system of comfort--our natural reaction to feeling like we screwed up (because we have). (I'm aware you know this.) It seems to be good for us, but it participates in systems like the one you're talking about. And it allows us all to be hypocritical. I have mixed feelings, really.
