There may be more to it than that. I need to try to find the actual interview, because the context he CLAIMS is there definitely changes things.

The context is mostly there, in the sense that he was talking about stereotypes about black popular culture which he was basically saying "Well, it wasn't like this when I was observing it." The problem is that he phrased it in such a way that it made him sound either tremendously racist or incredibly dumb, whatever the context. "And I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship." If he really honestly couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference, he's a god damn idiot extraordinaire. If it was just an impolitic turn of phrase and, before going, he didn't actually expect them to be acting different than white people, well, he's still stupid for phrasing it that way. He could have said "The fact of the matter is that there was no difference..." etc, this whole thing would never have happened, and it would have worked much better with the context ( ... )
