Hey everybody, just thought I'd pass this along in case you'd like to "Adopt a Clitoris"I kid you not. The organization is called Clitoraid and they work to restore women who've been the victims of genital mutilation. Not really a laughing matter when you think about it but I'm sorry, I can't help but bust out laughing at the name of their ( Read more... )

The name makes me giggle too, it sounds like the name of a Japanese company that didn't know what the word Clitoris means in English.

But it's awesome that someone is doing something for those poor women. There are very few instances of truly evil acts/people in this world, but destroying a girl's vagina to maintain an illusion of control over their reproductive organs is, to me, about as evil as it gets.

The only prolem I have with this organization is it's run by the Raelians who are a real coocoo lot. But I can certainly support the message. Some of the things I've read about the lengths that certain cultures go is bone chilling. If you think you've got the stomach for it, look up the wikipedia article on genital mutilation particularly the section dealing with childbirth.

Thanks dear, but I was an anthropology major. I know aaaaaaaaaaaaall about this. Mainly our discussion in school centered on whether anthropologists should try to step in and help these girls, because genital mutilation is part of their culture, and anthropologists aren't supposed to mess with the all-sacred culture.

Supposedly trying to stop the practice kind of backfired, as the practitioners didn't stop. To avoid prosecution for murder, they moved their practices to hospitals and started using sterilized instruments. That's good, because fewer girls got horrible infections or bled to death, but also bad because the practice continued. It's really awful.
