Nothing can stop the Army Space Corps!

As mentioned in my first GenCon post, I ran D20 Mars at GenCon last year, and was hoping to run something Planetary Romance like this year at GenCon. I was hoping to use an adaptation of Spirit of the Century to do this.

At its simplest level, it seems like this should be a fairly straightforward conversion. After all, Planetary Romance is part of ( Read more... )

Sounds very cool! I dig the Planetary Romance genre. You gonna put up your conversion/hack somewhere?

You're sort of looking at it. :) Well, that is, the spoiler-free version of my thoughts, as there is a good chance people that will play the game might read these posts.

I hadn't really considered this to be anything other than a minimalist bridge between gaming stuff I already own. I could put together a little summary if that would interest you. It would probably help me keep my thoughts straight, too.

Sure, that'd be cool! But no pressure or nothing... Are you going with a pre-made setting, or concocting your own?

That's sort of undecided. I'm leaning mildly towards using a modified version of Iron Lords of Jupiter (a setting from a D20 Mini-Game that appeared it Dungeon Magazine #101), though that really depends on where my brewing idea-stew takes me. The other possibility being Adamant's take on Mars.

I notice that when you start writing character novel ideas for SotC, the process tends to involve setting design in miniature right there. ILoJ is a bit less well defined setting, so it might be a bit more malleable for my purposes and give me places to add lots of my own elements. I'm also less likely to subconsciously emulate ERB's Mars the way I would if I was using Adamant's Mars.

Still, there were a few cool story conventions that came out of the D20 Mars game I ran last year that might inform my character design. If I go that route, I'll probably skip all this Army Space Corps stuff, and go with something more like X-Files meets ERB's Mars for an intro.

Ah, maps! In Giants and Ganakagok, you sit down at the table and collectively go around the table, with everyone adding a feature to a blank page to create a map. In Ganakagok, there are some set, central map places that the GM puts in, and the players add to that, going around the table and putting in cool names and little drawings (for example, we had the Spears of the Forgotten Ones - a taboo area of spiky, spiky rocks). In addition, the GM adds stuff to the map as the player's backstory and connections spring up. So if I had "hates the Uruquat people", the GM or I could put in an Uruquat village on the map. Then, as play progresses, we and the GM flesh out those areas ( ... )
