THE DISCWORLD NOVELS by TERRY PRATCHETT
Moving along in my 100 Things meme in the fantasy books portion, I introduce you to Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. I've heard of them for a long time but I think I only really got around to reading them within the five - seven years or so. Honestly, I don't know why I didn't get around to them sooner, they're just so much fun to read! The major themes that the books tackle are satirical but the world of Discworld is just so colourful, unique, complex and jam-packed with madness that they're just a fun romp either way.
I haven't gotten around to all of the books yet because the series is pretty massive, divided into categories focusing on particular characters or groups of people (although everyone meets everyone at one point or another); you can refer
to this chart to know which order you can read which books. I've pretty much read all of the novels where Death is the main protagonist; he's my favourite character especially after reading my first Discworld novel, Thief of Time (hence me using its cover for this entry). I have however slowly started making my way to the Guards novels, which should be pretty wacky fun. I also love the stories involving the Unseen University; those wizards always crack me up with their debates and all-around-ridiculousness (I mean, Unseen Academicals tackled the idea of the professors playing a Discworld version of football...talk about hijinks all around =D Plus, you know, football =DDD).
I would highly recommend the Discworld novels, whether you're a fantasy reader or not. They're just a load of wacky fun and pretty light reads (which makes for a very good series to turn to if you want to take a break from the "heavy" books).
