TOMMY/IZZY (THE FOUNTAIN)

Tommy and Izzy Creo. Tomas and Queen Isabel. Amidst all of the symbolism and postmodern storytelling and interweave between past, present and future, The Fountain (see my review and my 100 Things entry) is essentially about these two characters and the love that they have.

Their personalities are as different as night and day: Tommy is more rational and grounded why Izzy is the dreamer, more spiritual. Tommy sees death as a disease why Izzy regards death as "the road to awe." (I'm using phrases from the movie here). Yet despite these differences--heightened by Izzy's condition--their dynamic works. They are completely in love with each other, they're supposed to be at the peak of their lives but there's that spectre of Izzy's condition that just makes everything so heartbreaking.

I love that the movie's linear flow between past, present and future makes their story epic. There's Tomas the conquistador defending Spain and its queen, Isabel, from its enemies, charged to find the Tree of Life. There's the future space traveller Tom who seemingly forgot why he was on his mission to begin with. Who's fiction and who's real within the confines of the story is irrelevant when it comes to the point of the story: that it's about these two people and what happens when things come between them. Do those bonds snap? Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman play their respective characters to perfection (plus, they're just so pretty).

Tommy and Izzy's story is ultimately a simple one in the span of The Fountain; it's bittersweet yet it's ultimately a hopeful one.
