Q by EVAN MANDERY

Been a while since I've featured a science fiction novel in this 100 Things meme so I bring you Q by Evan Mandery (review). I read the book earlier this year after stumbling across it on GoodReads and fell in love with it after reading it.

Q made it on this list for a few things. From the science fiction perspective, the utilisation of time travel made sense but is not the central aspect of the novel. Rather, it serves as a mechanism to explore the concept of revisiting past decisions and telling yourself how to avoid certain miseries later on in your life. I mean, wouldn't we all like to have that ability at some point or another to jump on a time machine and go back in time to correct a blunder or save a relationship? But what really made the book for me is how this book was so much more than what the back of the book said it was about: sure, there's the time travel aspect and the love story involved but it also looks at life decisions and the importance of love in life. Amidst all of this are also all of the mash-ups and references made along the way: the philosophical inquiries, the academic musings, the pop culture references, the introspective reflections. Pretty much all of my favourite things all rolled into this one plot with a love story and a science fiction twist to boot.

With all of these elements floating around, it might not be a book for everyone but I wish this book was more known at the very least. I think I've mentioned it time and again that I enjoy novels with a time travel element to them and this book was well done in that respect; guess it helps that it wasn't hard science fiction or anything but it serves its purpose.
