SAGA OF THE SEVEN SUNS by KEVIN ANDERSON
Even though I'm still reading through the series at the moment, I decided to include it in my 100 Fantasy & Science Fiction Things list because I am very much enjoying this series.
Saga of Seven Suns is a space opera, a sci-fi epic in the same vein as Frank Herbert's Dune (
entry) or J. Michael Straczynski's Babylon 5 (entry). If you're into that kind of space opera--high on drama, space epicness and not so focused on the hard science--chances are you will enjoy this series.
As the title of the series suggests, there are seven books in this series:
- Hidden Empire (review)
- A Forest of Stars (review)
- Horizon Storms (review)
- Scattered Suns
- Of Fire and Night
- Metal Swarm
- The Ashes of Worlds
I love this series because it's not just about the overarching plots of the hydrogues coming out after an accident and rampaging about destroying human settlements in retaliation or the numerous political plots taking place in various civilisations across the galaxy: it's also about the characters and how they're put in these intense situations and obstacles. There's love stories and there's family drama. There's danger at every corner but there's also wonder in the places and other things that exist in this universe like the worldtrees. Even the descriptions of the hydrogues are intriguing.
I also love how quickly the story moves (sometimes I need that, especially as I've been reading this series while commuting). In the latest installment I read, Horizon Storms, the story picks up immediately and it just does not stop with all of the twists, turns and revelations. Just when you think the stakes can't get any higher, they do O_O
Anyways, it's a wonderful sci-fi series (come to think of it, I don't remember how I came across this series in the first place) that would entertain both fans of space opera and fantasy alike =)
