Simply put, given names are meaningless; how can a mere mortal, a parent, dare to think that they are wise enough to know you so well that they can give you a name that will fit and match

We know of course that spirits do not have names as we have in spoken languages, but it is important that our descriptions fit.

Now, I suppose it reflects a generosity of spirit, a thoughtful compassion, and describes the skills and abilities I was born with and have acquired over time. The meaning is just one word, but it is a word with a depth of meaning that has appropriately covered decades of one person's life and will hopefully describe decades more of it.
I am not saying that your rant is without merit, just that I am an exception to your point.
