****COMIC, ISSUE #1****

Writes on the chalkboard 100 times:
"I will not attempt to make the comic fit into events previously established by the TV series."

At least not much. Aw, hell, who'm I kidding?

This is a reaction-rant, mostly about canon as it relates to the Supernatural:Origins Comic #1. I tried to be nice, I set out to be clear and impartial, but that... didn't happen. May contain language and egregious use of capslock key. I'm too nitpicky for my own damned good sometimes.

The main part:

(First couple pages)

First off, still not liking the art, but that could just be my personal preference. I don't read many comics any more, but the kids... arg. they don't look like human beings. And Mary on the ceiling (page 2) still looks like she's wearing a magenta cumberbund instead of her abdomen being slashed. Blood! Where's the dripping blood!

(Poolhall scene - "Friday")

In the poolhall, the art's so bad stylized, my under-appreciative eye can't tell if John's supposed to be one of the pool players getting in a fight or not.

Missouri sharking pool for beer money?? Um, yeah, okay, sure. Arg. Apparently pool is something everyone with a connection to the supernatural world does, hunters and psychics... Anyway, okay. Missouri played pool and hung around in poolhalls. Sure. Still didn't know any of those people were supposed to be John until he announced himself.

Also, John didn't meet Missouri in a poolhall, he went to her house (not trailer) on December 17, 1983 (John's Journal) and three days later they went to the Winchesters' old house. No one died horribly except Mary, no frigging... arg. Getting ahead of myself. *goes back to writing lines on the chalkboard*

(later in the poolhall scene)

Geez. I'm surprised John didn't think Missouri was with the Demon, given how much she knew about him and the kids. The hooker/palm exchage was... Interesting. But seems way out of tone with the rest of the book. Also accidentally implies that John had a habit of visiting hookers, ("You're not a client, are you?" "What are you, a hooker?") which I don't think they were aiming for, or at least I sure as hell hope not.

(Visiting Missouri's trailer)

Okay, the damn station wagon is still there. WHERE THE HELL IS THE IMPALA!!! Dammit! It was there in the Pilot! it was the place where John, Sam and Dean gathered and watched Mary, the house, and the lives they'd known go up in smoke. It's their last and only refuge. That car is so central to the family's life, right from the start of the journey, how can the comic artist miss that and stick in a frigging station wagon?

(John and Missouri in the random house of Deeeeath)

Hee. Missouri with the pliers, ready to yank a fingernail off John. Heheh. I still harbour this secret (totally wrong, no doubt) theory about Missouri being a previous 23 year cycle "special Kid" that has been working with the Demon the whole time, so the frame with Missouri and the pliers makes me smirk in a "I knew it" sort of way. She looks evil. Heh.

The artist does do better with female faces, I think. I'm having an easier time figuring out what Missouri's expression is supposed to be rather than John's. Also, Missouri lives in a trailer? Is it then implied that Missouri was nomadic before she came to Lawrence and set up shop? Maybe a hunter? Possible, I guess, but...

In any case, this entire scene is contradicting events mentioned in the series. Missouri and John went to the Winchester's old burnt-out house in Lawrence, and she detected eeevil. They don't even mention the visit to the house. ("Home") Not random house o'splatter. Though "We're coming for the children" is cool. Ooo, evil toy cool too!

(Driving to the sitter's)

AGAIN!! WTF WAGON??? It seriously annoys me, even more than the art, that the comic writer/artist messed up the one piece of stability in the Winchesters' lives.

(Sitter-splatter)

Ooo... So... the - okay, this is *TOTALLY* against events established in the journal canon now, but interesting that they had the demon kill the people watching Sam and Dean, but leave Sam and Dean alive and unaware... implying something prevented it from getting them, maybe even something about the boys? Too bad we actually *MET ONE OF THOSE DEAD PEOPLE IN HOME!!!!* Didn't we? Or did we? Gawds. I can't even tell. No, no wait. This 'Julie' person was the one killed. Never mind. The ones they stayed with as stated in 'Home' and John's Journal online were Mike, (John's partner in the auto shop) and Kate, and Mike Guenther was the guy the boys talked to in "Home" I think. Julie is a comic character only.

Art-wise, comparing John's height to Dean's during the hug.... WTF??? Four year old Dean is now FOUR AND A HALF FEET TALL??? He grew a lot in that week... Or was it several weeks? I am confoozed.

("Take this with you...")

Wa-hey? Green snaggletooth? Horn? With rune-like squiggles. That is gonna lead John to the demon. Yeeeah... sure. What the hell, I mean it's totally AU to established character lore and history already, why the hell not. Throw in a smurf-hunt while you're at it. *grumpygrumbles*

Yech.

And that stupid station wagon was in the entire first section! NO IMPALA!!! That is so very far beyond wrong! *gnashing of teeth*

The mini-comic:

Nov 2 1989. Okay, quick math. That makes Sam six and a half and Dean ten and three quarters. Not fifteen-looking and twelve-looking.

So, now Mary got roasted on her birthday? Like that wouldn't have been mentioned before. Unless it's part of the "We tell Sammy it was a car wreck" line of bull, and ... nevermind. I call crap. I also agree fully with earlier comments made by Weesta that Sam not being able to swim, or at least dog paddle at six is utter tripe.

The art is still making me cringe even though it's a different artist for this bit. Good god, even when they do put the Impala in, it's purple and looks like a damned Buick. *Takes a deep breath* I mean the art does not appeal to me. But at least this person got the Impala in there, so yay.

That all said, on it's own without trying to match it up to anything, including the TV series, it's an okay comic. I'd buy the next one.

Anyways, that's my rant. Yeah, I'm still buying all the comics. I very much doubt I'll consider much of the stuff that's in them any part of the history of the series, even if Kripke himself showed up on my doorstep with a megaphone, shouting "The Comics Are Canon!" They already contradict stuff seen in the series, and also contradict John's Journal entries from the old WB site which have not only been around longer, they feel much more... realistic and emotionally grounded?

Anyway. What do you think about the first issue of the comic? Tell me the awesomeness of it that I'm missing! Please!
