A little late but 'Happy Thanksgiving' to all my LJ friends in the USA. We don't celebrate it here in the UK, obviously, but I feel I like have been doing so today. deslily phoned me from Florida this afternoon and we had a lovely chat for 45 mins, lots of bookish and Star Trek nattering and giggling. So glad you got to talk with your friends! That's the best part of any holiday, getting together either face to face or virtually.

I'm afraid some British people (not you) may think Thanksgiving is meant to be anti-British. Nigella Lawson was the guest on an American cooking show this week, and she made a joke something like, "Well, we don't do Thanksgiving; it's all about getting rid of us, after all." [emphasis mine]

(Heh) Actually, it is partly about running away from home To Do Things Our Own Way, but mostly it's about nearly starving/freezing to death as a result of complete unpreparedness, and being pathetically grateful to be still alive a year later! (...mostly thanks to some crucial help from the locals, who must have been shaking their heads and rolling their eyes over the newbies...)

I think that's why we cook so much food and eat ourselves into a stupor, in memory of those clueless early settlers. Not that we're so much wiser now, but at least we're clueless about other things than how to put food on the table. Mostly.

Yes, I knew it wasn't anti-British but all about giving thanks for not starving to death. A lot of people here really don't know that much about the USA. Perhaps I should ammend that to 'A lot of people here really don't know that much'. Ignorance in this country is staggering, so Americans (some, not all) are not alone! I would have thought Nigella Lawson would have been better informed though, her doubtless being the product of a very expensive education. Lord, I'm so jaundiced sometimes... lol.
