I'm afraid some British people (not you) may think Thanksgiving is meant to be anti-British. Nigella Lawson was the guest on an American cooking show this week, and she made a joke something like, "Well, we don't do Thanksgiving; it's all about getting rid of us, after all." [emphasis mine]
(Heh) Actually, it is partly about running away from home To Do Things Our Own Way, but mostly it's about nearly starving/freezing to death as a result of complete unpreparedness, and being pathetically grateful to be still alive a year later! (...mostly thanks to some crucial help from the locals, who must have been shaking their heads and rolling their eyes over the newbies...)
I think that's why we cook so much food and eat ourselves into a stupor, in memory of those clueless early settlers. Not that we're so much wiser now, but at least we're clueless about other things than how to put food on the table. Mostly.
