Fighting FUD with Humor is a review of Marcel Gagne's new book
Moving to Linux. This book tackles the switch and the REAL reason people don't. That reason is fear.
Linux is easy to install and use. People are not stupid (arguably) and computer users learn new things all the time. The point of Marcel's book is that we are taught to fear Linux and thus we do. Micro$oft would LOVE us to believe that the alternatives are too out of reach. Think about it. I'm sure you all think Mac is too expensive or Mac users constantly have problems with file formats between their machine and everyone else's. LIES!!! You probably also believe that Linux is really hard to install, doesn't work with most hardware and doesn't have the programs you need. You probably think you will have to be some sort of command line hacker to make it work. LIES!!!
Don't get me wrong, the switch is a paradigm shift. No you won't know how to add new fonts. No you won't know how to install that printer or other device. But did you know how to do those things when you were handed your first Windows machine? NO! And does it always work the way it is supposed to anyway? NO!
I always suggest people use a second machine for the conversion if they can. This way you will have a Windows computer for those tasks that NEED to be done NOW. Sometimes you don't have time to learn how to do something immediately. But if you work at it you will find yourself doing more and more on your Linux machine. And eventually when that Windows machine eats itself as they are wont to do, you'll barely ever use the crap thing.
If you don't want to switch, don't have time, are too lazy those are all good excuses. I can accept those. But never tell me it is too hard. That is Micro$oft propoganda and I just may have to kill you to prevent the spread of such dangerous ideas. I don't make the rules, but someone has to save the word from the evil.
