Not to be confused with Free Windows.
This guy has gone an entire year without Windows. It's an interesting article. He talks about the issues he had with both systems and how with some of the more advanced versions of Linux you can get amazing hardware support which is one of the lies Micro$oft and the vendors like to tell you.
I am not windows free (my work computer and one desktop at home are still windows), but I have been using Debian as my main OS on the computers I use the most for over a year and a half now (last April was the official switch) and I would never go back. I use OpenOffice to edit and create documents and my fellow classmates have yet to notice a difference. I use Firefox and GAIM to do my browsing and IM which is what I used under Windows anyway. My PDA connects and syncs and plays happy as does my MP3 player. I haven't hooked up my printer to it yet, but I plan to soon. That's just been a timing thing.
I have been tempted to switch my big desktop over as well but haven't had the time to do the necessary testing and such. That is the big bad Daddy with all the special video and audio hardware that I bought for video editing. I wonder how much of it will be supported. I wonder how easy to use the Linux video editing software is. I wonder if I will ever do video editing again so as to care. I have some documentation to read and testing to do before I make that switch, but maybe this winter break I will take some time to dual-boot that bitch and start the process. With me it is always a matter of conquering my laziness and having the time.
