I would take him home and feed him and pet him but if he goes to their house again without coming back, I would talk to the family and see if they mind him hanging around (and to make sure they are giving him food). But if you move to a different house I would take him back unless you give him to the family. I'm sorry about Charlie :(

i would visit him.

this happened to me once with my cat named boots.
he moved across the street, two houses down.
because my other cat scared him off.
we took him home, but he just went right back.
so there he stayed.
