Last week, a transgendered student was attacked on campus. They were attacked in a school bathroom and the attacker carved the word "it" into the student's chest.
When does the school decide to finally let us know about the hate crime? YESTERDAY. People I know said they knew right after it happened from hearing about from off campus sources first and the LGBT center in Long Beach wasn't even notified by the school. The e-mail the school sent was only a paragraph long and didn't even include the mock-up graphic of the perpetrator. E-mails about FIRE DRILLS are longer and we get them promptly. So yeah, this FUCKHEAD got away. Despite the fact that the last time there was an attack on a student on campus, they were able to catch the perp within twenty four hours by using campus security footage to trace him to the bus line he took.
The only reason the story is around campus now is because the Associated Press picked it up but news publications are referring to it as a slashing. IT IS A FUCKING HATE CRIME.
Oh, and it gets sadly worse. This came a week after LGBT diversity week. And before that, there was a huge Chicana Feminist Conference on campus and they recieved death threats. DEATH THREATS. WHICH I NEVER HEARD ABOUT OR GOT AN E-MAIL ABOUT. It wasn't even in the school paper. And all the campus administration offered them was campus escorts to walk them around. Which means student employees on go-carts who are often smaller than you are.
I'm just really shocked. This sort of thing happens everywhere but my school has a big reputation for diversity and the city is extremely gay friendly. It's LONG BEACH. We have one of the largest gay pride marches per year.
